History
Bay Area Digital™ opened its doors in 1992 as a partnership. It has focused much attention since that time on access technology for blind and visually impaired people. Its first major contribution to this work was the creation of an accessibility package for the OS/2 Operating System called Braille Explorer. In cooperation with TeleSensory Systems, the software was first created and then marketed on a worldwide basis. Braille Explorer implemented a trimodal approach to screen access for the blind by coupling speech technology with braille and additional guidance tones and sounds to create the most accessible gateway to an operating system ever invented before or during the 1990s. Braille adaptations allowed the company to work closely with all major vendors of access technology for the blind throughout the United States, Canada, and western Europe including Blazie Engineering/Freedom Scientific, Humanware, TeleSensory Systems, Baum Retec AG, Germany and ONCE, Spain.
In the late 1990s, Bay Area Digital began giving greater focus to specific technologies and software geared toward Microsoft Windows, Sun Solaris and various Linux operating systems [due to the decline of OS/2.] Leveraging a growing relationship with Baum Retec AG, Bay Area Digital implemented many braille-based systems on a consulting basis for the specific employment of blind and low vision individuals.
In 2005, Bay Area Digital modified its operating structure to form a Limited Liability Corporation (LLC) in [order to focus on developing technologies related to health care, sports activities and other related life needs of the blind and visually impaired. The pursuit of a state-of-the-art talking blood glucose meter, a talking insulin pump, an Oximeter, and a full array of talking exercise products are primary development interests of the company.
Bay Area Digital publishes a quarterly newsletter, Pulses, and holds seminars quarterly for blind and visually impaired residents in the local community to meet with principles of the company and diabetic educators in the Bay Area.
Bay Area Digital, LLC, is headquartered in an historic and affordable downtown San Francisco office building (the Flood Building, http://www.floodbuilding.com) for purposes of convenience to the primary personnel and access to business services, as well as commutable proximity to many high-tech firms throughout the Bay Area.
